One major question that always lurks in people's minds is if deicing materials cause long term damage to their hard earned surfaces?
The answer in short is yes, deicing salts increase the freeze-thaw cycles and create a prying effect on masonry and natural stone alike.
-Sodium Chloride (basic rock salt) is the worst by far.
-Calcium Chloride is expensive but can provide much better deicing and causes slightly less damage.
-Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) is by far the safest option but can be tricky to find. Give us a call! 412.596.8595
Your best bet is to shovel the snow (gently now!) Removing your snow shovels metal blade and dedicating specific tools to natural stone or other sensitive areas.
For those who do not want to deal with ice at all, consult with a designer, we can put together a proposal to heat your areas with electric or geothermal systems.
Worst case scenario just know you can count on us to repair and restore these surfaces so that they stand the test of time. Neglecting these areas can mean expensive removal and rebuild.
